How to Get the Best Rate

Get pre-approved before visiting the dealer

Apply at your bank, credit union, and one online lender. Having a pre-approval in hand gives you a baseline rate to beat and shows the dealer you are a serious buyer with financing lined up.

Credit unions typically offer the lowest rates

Credit unions are nonprofit and pass savings to members. Their auto loan rates are often 1-2% lower than banks and 2-4% lower than dealer financing. Joining a credit union is easy and usually free.

Check your credit before applying

Get your free credit report and fix any errors before rate shopping. Even a small score improvement (e.g., from 690 to 710) can move you into a better tier and save hundreds in interest.

Consider refinancing if your rate is too high

If your credit has improved or rates have dropped since you took out your loan, refinancing after 6-12 months of on-time payments can significantly lower your monthly payment and total interest.
