Frequently Asked Questions

What does 'out-the-door price' mean?

The out-the-door (OTD) price is the total amount you pay to drive a vehicle off the lot. It includes the vehicle price, sales tax, title fee, registration, plate fees, and any dealer fees like the documentation fee. It does not include ongoing costs like insurance or maintenance.

What fees are included in an OTD price?

An OTD price typically includes: state sales tax, title fee, registration fee, plate fee, doc fee, and inspection fees (in states that require them). EV buyers may also pay an EV surcharge in some states. Our calculator uses real state-specific DMV fee schedules for all 50 states.

How much do dealer doc fees add to the OTD price?

Doc fees vary widely by state. Some states cap them (California at $85, New York at $175), while others have no cap. In uncapped states, dealers may charge $300 to $800 or more. Our calculator shows whether your state caps the doc fee and what that cap is.

Do trade-ins reduce the taxable amount?

In most states, yes. When you trade in a vehicle, the sales tax is calculated on the difference between the new vehicle price and the trade-in value. This can save you hundreds or thousands in taxes. Our calculator accounts for this automatically.
