Quick Answers
What does a VIN number tell you?
A 17-character VIN reveals the vehicle's country of manufacture, maker, vehicle type, model year, assembly plant, and production sequence. It also unlocks recall history, title records, and price history from dealer databases. Each character position has a defined meaning set by ISO standard 3779.
Can a VIN tell you if a car was in an accident?
Not directly — VINs identify a vehicle but don't store accident data. Accident history is attached to a VIN in third-party databases (Carfax, AutoCheck, NMVTIS). Our Vehicle History Check and VIN Price Check surface known history flags from dealer and government sources.
How do I find my VIN without the car?
Your VIN appears on your vehicle registration, insurance card, title document, and most insurance apps. If you have access to the car remotely: dashboard corner visible through the windshield, driver-side door jamb sticker, and under the hood on the firewall near the engine.

How to Read a Window Sticker (Monroney Label)
Every new car sold in the US must display a Monroney sticker. Here is what each line means — and what dealers don't want you to notice.
Base MSRP
The factory price for the standard model with no options. This is the floor, not your target price.
Options / Packages
Factory-installed add-ons (tech packages, premium paint, sunroof). These are legitimate costs baked in at the factory — not negotiable once the car is built.
Destination & Delivery
Fixed fee set by the manufacturer to ship the vehicle from the factory. Non-negotiable — it is the same at every dealer for that model.
Total MSRP
Base + options + destination. This is the manufacturer's suggested price. The word 'suggested' means you can negotiate below this number on most cars.
Dealer Add-ons / ADM ⚠ Negotiable / Avoidable
Anything below the MSRP line that the dealer printed on a separate sticker. Paint sealant, window tint, nitrogen tires, 'market adjustment' — these are pure profit. Refuse all of them.
Dealer Market Adjustment ⚠ Negotiable / Avoidable
An amount added on top of MSRP for high-demand vehicles. Pure dealer markup. On any car not in a shortage, this is negotiable to zero. Walk away if they won't remove it.
Pro tip: The VIN on the window sticker must match the VIN on the dashboard and door jamb. Decode it above to confirm the spec matches what you were shown. Discrepancies may indicate a switched sticker.
